Unlocking the Wisdom of the Four Cups: A Path to Mindful Openness in Mental Health

A picture of Buddhist Four Cups outlining how perspective impacts our mental health
A picture of Buddhist Four Cups outlining how perspective impacts our mental health

Amid the hustle and bustle of modern life, it is essential to prioritize your mental health with insight and strategies derived from the teachings of mindfulness.

🫖 In the realm of mindfulness and personal growth, the Four Cups (a story inspired by Buddhism) offer us profound insights into how we engage with the world around us. When we view these cups through the lens of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), these cups become transformative pathways toward a more open and fulfilling life. Let’s embark on a journey through the cups and their corresponding antidotes, exploring how they can guide us towards a state of mindful openness.

1️⃣ Full Cup: No Room for New Information

Imagine your mind as a cup ☕️ brimming with your existing beliefs, ideas, and perceptions. In this state, there is no room for anything new to be poured in. This represents a mindset closed off from growth due to rigid attachments.

🌀 Antidote: Create Space

This involves embracing the present moment with openness and flexibility. Instead of allowing judgment and resistance to cloud our perception, we let thoughts flow in and out like ripples on water. This practice cultivates a mindful presence that enables exploration without being weighed down by preconceived notions.

Strategy to Practice: Mindful Awareness

Practice being present without judgment. Notice the thoughts and beliefs that arise, and gently let them go. Develop flexibility in your thinking by allowing room for new perspectives and insights. Mindfulness meditation can be a powerful tool here, helping you observe your thoughts without becoming entangled in them.

2️⃣ The Cloudy Cup: Bias and PreConceptions

Just like a cup clouded with biases and preconceptions, our minds can become tainted by past experiences and assumptions. This foggy lens hinders us from seeing situations clearly and engaging with an open heart.

🌤️ Antidote: Clear it Up

This involves willingly listening and unhooking from biases. By challenging our assumptions and seeking clarity, we allow ourselves to see situations from various angles. This process allows the light of understanding to disperse the clouds of bias, promoting a more genuine and open perspective.

Strategy to Practice: Unhooking

Unhook from your biases and thoughts. Instead of taking your thoughts as absolute truths, learn to observe them as passing mental events. By creating distance from your biases, you can engage with situations more openly. Practice questioning your assumptions and being curious about other perspectives.

3️⃣ The Closed Cup: Resisting New Ideas

Imagine a cup with a lid firmly shut. It blocks out any new ideas or perspectives, leaving us stagnant and resistant to change. This state reflects a mindset that is closed off from growth and transformation.

🌱 Antidote: Open Up

Cultivating curiosity and an eagerness to explore new information opens the lid of our minds. It lets in the refreshing breeze of curiosity that sweeps away the staleness of close-mindedness, allowing new ideas to flow in and enrich our understanding.

Strategy to Practice: Values Clarification

Explore your core values and what truly matters to you. When you align your actions with your values, you become more willing to embrace new ideas that align with them. This encourages openness to growth and change, as you prioritize what resonates deeply with you.

4️⃣ The Hole in the Cup: Distracted and Inattentive

Picture a cup with a hole at the bottom. Information passes through without making a lasting impact. In this state, distractions prevent us from fully engaging with the present and absorbing meaningful insights.

🛠️ Antidote: Patch it Up

This involves mindfully receiving information aligned with our values. By mending the holes of distraction and practicing mindfulness, we enable ourselves to truly absorb and integrate valuable insights, allowing them to shape our growth.

Strategy to Practice: Mindful Engagement

Practice mindful presence in your interactions and experiences. When you are engaged and fully present, you are better equipped to absorb and integrate information. Mindfulness exercises, like focusing on your breath or senses, can enhance your ability to be fully present and attentive.

🍵 Open Cup

As we navigate through these cups and their antidotes, we journey toward the state of the Open Cup. This cup symbolizes a mind that knows itself, welcomes new perspectives, and remains receptive to the ever-changing flow of life. Embracing these teachings serves as a reminder to continually work on our mindfulness, personal growth, and willingness to engage with the world around us. Through this process, we open ourselves to a more enriched and open-hearted existence. ✨

Embracing Uniqueness: A Holistic Approach to Treating ADHD and Unlocking Hidden Potential

In a world filled with square holes and round pegs, it’s time we reimagined how we approach Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Picture a society that celebrates the extraordinary minds of neurodivergent (aka neurospicy 🌶️) individuals, where uniqueness is honored, and hidden potential is unlocked as we challenge the confines of conformity and discover the power of embracing the untamed brilliance of the neurodivergent mind.

There is power and beauty in embracing uniqueness and understanding the diverse needs of neurodivergent individuals. In a society that often imposes rigid expectations and norms, it’s essential to recognize that ADHD brains, with their inherent strengths and challenges (aka super powers 🦹🏻‍♀️ and kryptonite 🪨), should not be forced into a one-size-fits-all box.

When we treat ADHD holistically and acknowledge the distinct characteristics of neurodivergent minds, this can lead to greater well-being and self-acceptance for the individual through the lifespan.

The Uniqueness of ADHD

ADHD brains, often characterized as “hunter brains,” possess extraordinary qualities that differ from neurotypical minds. These individuals often exhibit heightened creativity, exceptional problem-solving skills, and a penchant for out-of-the-box thinking. However, their natural tendencies can clash with conventional expectations, particularly in academic settings that emphasize conformity and structured learning.

In the past, there were hunters 🏹 and there were farmers 🌽 🍓. Each type had their role and purpose…the hunter had a keen sense of their surroundings, agility to move quickly, sensitivity to sensory in order to recognize slight changes in the landscape for the hunt, ability to be innovative and creative, and hyper focus and insight in order to survive, keep others safe, and to fend off the saber tooth tigers of life. Whereas the farmers had meticulous ability and patience to tend to the land, forage for wild vegetation and other nutrients like honey for food.

Hunters and farmers still exist today but, in our modern times, the landscape has shifted. The majority of our world is neurotypical farmers who have designed our society for their purpose. This means the neurodivergent hunters spend their days in a society not designed for them. A world of classrooms, jobs, and other structures codes of expected behavior. This can leave the hunters feeling like they do not belong, something is “wrong” with them, and they need to be “fixed.” In truth, this is absolute nonsense. Why are we pathologizing ADHD when we should be celebrating it?!

It’s essential to understand that ADHD is not a mere disorder or deficiency but a distinctive cognitive style that brings both challenges and exceptional strengths to the table.

  1. Hyperfocus 👓 and Creativity ✨:
One remarkable aspect of the neurodivergent mind is its ability to hyperfocus—a state where individuals can become fully absorbed in a task that captivates their interest. In this intense focus, they tap into a wellspring of creativity, generating innovative ideas, connections, and solutions that others may overlook (aka Genius Zone or Flow). By embracing this hyperfocus, we can unlock remarkable creativity and harness it as a powerful tool for personal and professional growth.
  2. Out-of-the-Box Thinking 📦:
The neurodivergent mind possesses a natural inclination for divergent thinking. They have an extraordinary capacity to see beyond the confines of traditional solutions, exploring unconventional approaches and perspectives. This unique cognitive style often leads to fresh insights, groundbreaking ideas, and disruptive innovations. By valuing and nurturing this out-of-the-box thinking, we can foster a society that thrives on diverse perspectives and continuous progress.
  3. Sensitivity to Stimulation 🔥:
While the neurotypical mind may seek stability and predictability, the neurodivergent mind craves stimulation. They are wired to respond to novelty and thrive in dynamic environments. This sensitivity to stimulation can fuel their curiosity, passion, and zest for life. By creating environments that provide the right balance of structure and novelty, we can enable neurodivergent individuals to flourish and maximize their potential.
  4. Multitasking and Adaptability 🧠:
The neurodivergent mind often possesses remarkable multitasking abilities and adaptability. While juggling multiple tasks and stimuli may overwhelm others, neurodivergent individuals can navigate complex situations with agility. Their brains excel at processing multiple streams of information, allowing them to find connections and patterns that others might miss. By embracing their multitasking strengths and providing support in managing overwhelm, we can empower them to succeed in a world that demands flexibility and adaptability.

The neurodivergent mind is a tapestry of unique cognitive patterns, strengths, and sensitivities. Rather than forcing them to conform to a neurotypical mold, we must celebrate their inherent gifts and create environments that value their diverse perspectives. By recognizing and embracing the richness of their neurodivergent minds, we can unlock their true potential, fostering personal growth, innovation, and a more inclusive society.

The Square Hole and the Round Peg

In our society, there exists a rigid framework that defines what is considered “normal” or “appropriate” behavior. Unfortunately, this framework fails to account for the diversity of cognitive styles and neurodivergent minds. When neurodivergent individuals are forced into this square hole, they can experience feelings of inadequacy, frustration, and self-doubt. Instead, we need to recognize that their strengths lie outside the box and celebrate their unique abilities.

Embracing the Hunter Brain

Rather than asking ADHD individuals to conform, shifting the focus to create environments that value their strengths and provide opportunities for growth. By understanding their need for stimulation, movement, and variety, we can design learning experiences that align with their natural tendencies. Incorporating hands-on activities, allowing for flexibility, and promoting personalized learning approaches can empower these individuals and foster a sense of belonging.

Within the neurodivergent mind resides a remarkable cognitive style often referred to as the “hunter brain.” This metaphor captures the essence of their innate strengths and provides a lens through which we can better understand and appreciate their unique way of experiencing the world.

  1. Unrelenting Curiosity:
The hunter brain is driven by an unquenchable curiosity, constantly seeking out new experiences, knowledge, and connections. Neurodivergent individuals possess an insatiable thirst for learning and exploration, fueled by their relentless desire to understand the world around them. Embracing this curiosity allows us to tap into a wellspring of intellectual and creative potential, fostering a lifelong love of learning and discovery.
  2. Hyperfocus and Intense Engagement:
One of the hallmarks of the hunter brain is its ability to hyperfocus, diving deep into tasks or activities that capture its attention. When neurodivergent individuals encounter a subject or project that truly engages them, their ability to concentrate and immerse themselves in it is unparalleled. By embracing and supporting their hyperfocus, we create opportunities for them to fully leverage their potential, leading to remarkable achievements and breakthroughs.
  3. Adaptive Problem-Solving:
The hunter brain possesses remarkable adaptability and resourcefulness. Faced with challenges and obstacles, neurodivergent individuals often demonstrate innovative problem-solving skills. They approach problems from unconventional angles, drawing upon their diverse perspectives and thinking outside the box. By recognizing and nurturing this adaptive problem-solving ability, we can unlock their unique strengths and empower them to overcome obstacles with resilience and ingenuity.
  4. Dynamic Energy and Drive:
The hunter brain is fueled by dynamic energy and a relentless drive to pursue goals and ambitions. Neurodivergent individuals often possess an infectious enthusiasm and passion that can inspire those around them. However, this energy may require guidance to ensure it is channeled effectively. By providing supportive structures, nurturing their passions, and helping them develop self-regulation skills, we can help neurodivergent individuals harness their energy and drive toward meaningful pursuits.
  5. Embracing Individuality:
It is essential to recognize that the hunter brain is not a flaw or deviation from the norm; it is a unique cognitive style that offers immense potential for growth and contribution. By embracing the individuality of the hunter brain, we create a society that values diversity and appreciates the varied perspectives it brings. By celebrating the strengths of the hunter brain and providing inclusive environments that honor neurodiversity, we can foster a culture of acceptance, empowerment, and growth.

Embracing the hunter brain means celebrating the unique cognitive style of neurodivergent individuals, recognizing their strengths, and providing the support and understanding they need to thrive. By valuing their curiosity, harnessing their hyperfocus, encouraging adaptive problem-solving, and nurturing their dynamic energy, we can unlock their full potential and create a world where their unique contributions are cherished. Let us embrace the hunter brain and embark on a journey of empowerment, growth, and acceptance.

Authenticity over Masking 🎭

Society often sends the message that neurodivergent individuals must suppress their true selves to fit into predefined roles. This expectation places an enormous burden on them, leading to feelings of shame and the belief that they are somehow flawed. Instead, let us shift the narrative and encourage authenticity. By embracing their unique qualities, we can help neurodivergent individuals discover their passions, build self-confidence, and navigate the world on their own terms.

In a world that often imposes expectations of conformity, neurodivergent individuals are often asked to mask their true selves to fit into predefined roles. However, the path to genuine well-being lies in embracing authenticity and honoring the unique qualities of neurodivergent minds. Let us delve deeper into the importance of authenticity over masking and the transformative power it holds.

  1. Embracing Individuality:
Each individual with ADHD possesses a rich tapestry of strengths, talents, and perspectives that contribute to their unique identity. Embracing authenticity means recognizing and valuing these inherent qualities rather than suppressing or masking them. By honoring the individuality of neurodivergent minds, we create an environment that celebrates diversity and allows for true self-expression.
  2. Self-Acceptance and Self-Worth:
When neurodivergent individuals are constantly pressured to mask their true selves, it can lead to a profound sense of disconnection and internal conflict. Authenticity, on the other hand, allows for self-acceptance and the development of a strong sense of self-worth. By embracing their authentic selves, neurodivergent individuals can cultivate a positive self-image, fostering resilience and emotional well-being.
  3. Nurturing Passions and Strengths:
Authenticity allows neurodivergent individuals to fully explore and embrace their passions, interests, and strengths. By honoring their natural inclinations and providing opportunities to cultivate their unique talents, we empower them to develop a strong sense of identity and pursue meaningful endeavors. Nurturing these passions fosters a sense of purpose and fulfillment, enabling them to thrive as their authentic selves.
  4. Building Resilience:
Masking one’s true identity requires significant mental and emotional effort, often leading to exhaustion and a depletion of resources. In contrast, authenticity encourages neurodivergent individuals to tap into their innate resilience. By accepting and celebrating their authentic selves, they can build a foundation of self-compassion and self-advocacy, allowing them to navigate challenges with greater confidence and adaptability.
  5. Fostering Connection and Understanding:
When neurodivergent individuals feel compelled to mask their true selves, they may experience a sense of isolation and a lack of understanding from others. Embracing authenticity creates an opportunity for open dialogue, fostering connection and empathy. By encouraging an environment that embraces diversity and values neurodivergent minds, we promote a culture of acceptance and understanding.

Authenticity over masking is a powerful paradigm shift that encourages neurodivergent individuals to embrace and celebrate their true selves. By nurturing their passions, fostering self-acceptance, and providing an environment that values diversity, we create a space where they can thrive and contribute their unique perspectives to the world. Let us shed the expectations of conformity and embrace the authenticity of neurodivergent minds, paving the way for a more inclusive and compassionate society.

Holistic Treatment Approaches

While medication can be a beneficial tool for some neurodivergent individuals, it is crucial to recognize that it is not the only solution. Holistic treatment approaches take into account the whole person, addressing their physical, emotional, and social well-being. Therapeutic interventions such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, mindfulness practices, exercise, and nutrition can all play significant roles in managing ADHD symptoms and fostering overall wellness.

When it comes to treating ADHD, adopting a holistic approach acknowledges that the well-being of individuals extends beyond their cognitive functioning. By addressing the interconnected aspects of their lives – including physical health, emotional well-being, and social support – holistic treatment approaches offer a comprehensive and empowering path towards managing ADHD symptoms. Let’s explore some key elements of holistic treatment for ADHD:

  1. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT):
CBT is a therapeutic approach that helps neurodivergent individuals understand how their thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors impact their daily lives. By working with a skilled therapist, individuals can develop coping strategies, improve organizational skills, and learn effective problem-solving techniques. CBT also focuses on building self-awareness, managing emotions, and promoting positive thinking patterns to enhance overall well-being.
  2. Mindfulness Practices:
Mindfulness practices, such as meditation and breathing exercises, can be invaluable tools for neurodivergent individuals. These practices help cultivate present-moment awareness, reduce stress, and improve attention and focus. By integrating mindfulness into daily routines, individuals can enhance self-regulation, increase resilience, and improve overall cognitive function.
  3. Exercise and Physical Activity:
Regular exercise has been shown to have significant benefits for neurodivergent individuals. Engaging in physical activity helps release excess energy, improves executive functioning, and enhances mood and overall well-being. Activities such as aerobic exercises, yoga, and martial arts can help neurodivergent individuals channel their energy, improve self-control, and promote a sense of calm.
  4. Nutrition and Sleep:
A balanced diet and adequate sleep play vital roles in managing ADHD symptoms. Nutritional choices that include whole foods, a variety of fruits and vegetables, and essential nutrients can support brain health and optimize cognitive function. Additionally, establishing consistent sleep routines and practicing good sleep hygiene can improve focus, attention, and mood regulation.
  5. Supportive Relationships and Social Skills:
Nurturing supportive relationships is crucial for neurodivergent individuals. Seeking support from family, friends, and support groups can provide a sense of understanding and connection. Social skills training can also be beneficial, helping individuals develop effective communication, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills.
  6. Medication Consideration:
While holistic treatment approaches focus on non-pharmacological interventions, it’s important to recognize that medication can be a valuable tool for some neurodivergent individuals. Medication, when prescribed and monitored by a qualified healthcare professional, may help manage symptoms and improve functioning. However, the decision to use medication should be made on an individual basis, taking into account personal circumstances, preferences, and potential benefits and risks.

A holistic approach to treating ADHD recognizes that individuals are multifaceted beings, and their well-being relies on nurturing their mind, body, and spirit. By integrating cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness practices, exercise, nutrition, social support, and, when appropriate, medication, we can create a comprehensive treatment plan that supports individuals in managing ADHD symptoms and fostering overall wellness. Remember, it is essential to consult with qualified healthcare professionals to tailor treatment approaches to individual needs and circumstances.

Let us reimagine the way we approach ADHD by honoring the uniqueness of each individual’s neurodivergent mind. By embracing their inherent strengths, creating inclusive environments, and providing holistic support, we can empower neurodivergent individuals to thrive in a world that may not always understand them. Remember, it is through acceptance and celebration of our differences that we truly enrich our lives and contribute to a more compassionate and inclusive society.

The Healing Connection

Why the Therapist-Client Relationship Matters More Than You Think

Welcome. You’ve completed the first steps of onboarding and have now been thoughtfully matched with your therapist.
That alone is something worth pausing for.

Before your consult, we want to share how we think about therapy here and why the relationship itself matters so much.

If you are reading this with a tight chest, a cautious hope, or a skeptical eyebrow raised just enough to stay protected, you are not doing this wrong.
You are right on time.

This consult is a chance to ask questions and get a feel for the connection.

Finding a therapist is not just a logistical task. It is a relational leap. One that often happens while you are already tired, already carrying a lot, and already unsure whether you want to explain yourself one more time.

At Storm Haven, we believe the most important part of therapy is not just what is said in the room.
It is how you are met in it.

Healing does not begin with advice.
It begins with attunement.

Therapy Is a Relationship, Not a Transaction

This is not fast or formulaic care.

Therapy here is not about fixing you, optimizing you, or handing you a checklist for being human correctly. It is about sitting with another person in a space shaped by trust, consent, and care.

Your therapist is not here to perform expertise at you. They are here to walk alongside you as you explore what hurts, what has been hidden, and what may be ready to be reclaimed.

The therapeutic relationship is the soil everything else grows from. Without it, even the best tools fall flat. With it, change becomes possible because it feels safe enough to begin.

What Makes a Good Match

Not every therapist will be your therapist.
That is not a failure. It is information.

A good fit is often felt before it is fully understood. It can show up as ease, curiosity, or the sense that you can breathe a little deeper in the room.

Many things shape that fit, including approach, communication style, cultural attunement, and goals. Some people want structure and skills. Others need space for reflection and meaning-making. Some thrive with gentle guidance. Others need collaborative conversation or quiet presence.

You deserve a therapist who adapts to you, not one who asks you to adapt to them.

And sometimes, there is simply no spark. Therapy is still a relationship, and not all relationships are meant to continue. When the fit is right, it often feels like an exhale.

Finding the Rhythm Takes Time

Like any new relationship, the beginning of therapy can feel uncertain or awkward. That is normal.

Trust is rarely instant. It tends to unfold over a few sessions as the rhythm settles and the nervous system learns the room.

We encourage giving it a little time. And we also encourage honesty.

If something feels off and continues to feel off, bringing it into the room is part of the work. A good therapist will welcome that conversation. If the match still does not feel aligned, we will support you in transitioning, either within Storm Haven or to a trusted provider in the community.

What matters most is that you receive the care you came for. Our ego does not belong in that equation.

Safety Is the Bedrock

You deserve to feel safe.

Not tolerating it safe.
Not bracing yourself safe.
But the kind of safety where you do not have to explain your humanity to be understood.

At Storm Haven, safety is not something you earn. It is something we prioritize from the first hello. Because only when you feel safe enough can you be real enough.

And realness is where healing lives.

The Ripple Effect of Therapy

What happens in therapy does not stay in the therapy room.

The compassion you practice here often reshapes how you speak to yourself. The boundaries you explore here ripple into your relationships. The self-trust you build here informs decisions about work, love, identity, and direction.

The therapeutic relationship becomes a template for what is possible.
Respect. Warmth. Accountability. Care. Boundaries.

It begins between you and your therapist, but it does not end there.

When the Fit Is Not Right

Sometimes, even with care and intention, a relationship does not click.

That does not mean you failed.
It does not mean therapy is not for you.
It simply means this pairing is not the one that will support your next chapter.

We will always respect your autonomy in making that call. And if you would like help finding a better fit, we are here for that too. No shame. No pressure. Just care.

A Gentle Reminder Before Your Consult

Whatever brings you here, named or unnamed, loud or quiet, you are welcome.

Storm Haven was created as a place where all parts of you can land.Where the mask can soften, your breath can settle, and you are met with curiosity instead of judgment.

If you are still unsure, let this be your reminder:

You are not too much.
You are not late.
Nothing about you is broken.
You are fully human.
And you are right on time.

With warmth and care,
Jen Hyatt, LMFT

Storm Haven Counseling & Wellness

TL;DR

  • You’ve been matched with a therapist, and a consult is coming up.
  • The consult is a chance to ask questions and get a feel for the connection.
  • Therapy at Storm Haven is relational, not transactional. The relationship matters more than any single tool or technique.
  • A good fit is something you often feel over time. If it’s not the right match, that’s information, not failure.
  • Trust and safety are prioritized from the start. You don’t have to perform, explain, or earn your way into care.
  • If something feels off, it’s okay to name it. We’ll support you in finding the care that fits.

You don’t need to have clarity yet. Starting with curiosity is enough.

🌿 FAQ: What if I don’t click with my therapist right away?

That can happen. Like any relationship, therapy takes time to build trust. If something feels off and continues to feel off after a few sessions, it is okay to name it. A good therapist will explore it with you or help you find someone better suited.

You deserve a relationship that feels real and supportive. If you are unsure where to start, you can always reach out to us. We are here to help you find the fit that feels like home.

I had a dream last night. I was standing with two other therapists—seemingly we were there for some kind of award. We were all dressed in beautiful therapist-type outfits. I mean when you see a therapist, this is the way they were “suppose” to look like. So, I am standing there and the host of the show came up to me. The one who everyone else’s opinion funnels through and represents the absolute truth. She looked me up and down, touched my shoulder in disgust, and made a sound of “tsk, tsk, tsk” as she waved her finger at me then pointed over to the distant corner and told me to go “sit down.”

As this was happening the other two began walking to the front. I recall sitting in the corner and watching the crowd applaud and celebrate these two therapists and having a longing to be up there with them. I thought, “if I could only look and act like them then I would fit in.”

They finished, waved, and exited the stage. A calmness came into the room. Another person (not the host) stated in confusion, “there was suppose to be another therapist, I am not sure what happened.” They were getting ready to move on and held up a huge trophy for the victor to claim. The trophy that represented winning with its golden and fancy edges.

At that time, I recall a surge within me erupt as I stood up, and began running down the aisle with my hand up waving in hopes they could hear me. I yelled “here I am, here I am!” I felt like Cinderella running from the castle but, instead towards the stage.

There I now stood in front of a large room full of people of all various shapes and sizes all with their own perceptions and truths of how one “should” look.

I began with, “you know I was standing over there” then realized no one could hear me.

I walked at a quick pace almost running in desperation to get the mic and deliver the message I needed to proclaim for all to hear in hopes they would truly “hear.”

Then, I began again with a loudness that could not escape the crowd. “You know I was standing over there (as I pointed towards the back of the crowd)…and someone came up to me, looked me up and down, touched my shoulder and pulled away in disgust…I felt unworthy, less than, and ugly…and I was directed to sit in the corner. I felt great shame as the weight of society’s thoughts and beliefs weighed on me.”

I paused and took a deep breath, dropping the societal shield that covered and protected me for so long. “This is me. I am so fucking tired of society telling us how we ‘should’ look. The conditioning and marketing that guides us this way or that…in a sea of unrealistic standards that leave us feeling like we could never meet the mark and pit us against each other.”

I then held my arm up, chin tilted up, eyes towards the sky that signaled freedom from societal conditioning, I took another deep breath and said “accept me for who I am because this is me! Fully me. I am done living my life in the box that society has told me to be in. Destined to die when never truly having lived. I am done sitting in the corner and feeling ashamed because of the ‘perception’ of what is beautiful! So. Fucking. Done!”

I recall the crowd, some with tears in their eyes, standing in deep recognition then exploding into cheer. Shields dropped.

Then. I woke up.

Be you. Dress in what makes you happy. Fuck societal conditioning. 🗝️🏴‍☠️

Seek Refuge and Support from the Storms of Life

Majestic Moon

I was standing outside with my feet planted into the ground to look up and see the beauty of the night. Instantaneously I felt a sense of calm, balance, and appreciation for life and the beauty of nature.

Looking back on this photo, I am transported back to this feeling and reminded of Storm Haven’s tagline “Seek refuge and support from the storms of life.”

While life can bring great joys and majestic wonders, as humans, life can also bring great challenges that we wish we could escape, avoid, or push away. Although, when we do…we find it may only makes the difficulties worse and the sorrows heightened. Shadows of despair may be cast into what joy we previously had. Like a lonely ship at sea 🌊 enveloped by the storms of life desperately wanting to get to the safety of the cove.

Storm Haven’s tagline was born from this experience…from the pain (storms) I witnessed so many of my clients within and the relief that came by two humans discussing, processing, and finding a way forward—with tools that allowed them to develop a new relationship with the challenges of life and discovering new ways of responding.

This is my mission. May everyone know what it means to live the intentional and well lived life and not miss the beauty right outside our door ❤️

Is Online Therapy Right for You?

Jennifer Hyatt (DBA Storm Haven, Counseling and Wellness) has offered virtual (online) Telehealth therapy sessions since 2017.

Telehealth therapy sessions, such as virtual or online therapy, has become an increasingly popular choice for many clients. All sessions are offered on a secure and confidential platform.

While this page serves as a general overview of some of the benefits and, in contrast, disadvantages to online therapy, it does not encompass all benefits and/ or disadvantages.

Benefits of Online Therapy

Convenience of appointments.  No more squeezing one more appointment into an already full day, scrambling to get to your therapist office, spending precious time maneuvering traffic, or factoring in the cost of gas.

It is private.  There does not exist the possibility of running into someone you know in the waiting room.

Reduces risk of exposure when community exposure to sickness is at a higher rate.

Comfort.  You can log on from anywhere in the state of California from the comfort of your own home.  This is especially beneficial if you live in a rural area and it is difficult to get into traditional, in-person therapy.

Reduced stigma.  Oftentimes clients may worry about the stigma of mental health and attending therapy in a more traditional office setting.

Getting to the heart of things.  Clients, who attend online therapy, may feel a greater sense of anonymity and thus may feel more motivated to get the heart of the challenge more readily than in traditional therapy.  This may result in faster healing for the client and a more expedited form of therapy.

Consistency.  If a client is sick, they do not have to cancel as is with traditional, in-person therapy.

Accessibility.  Online therapy allows many clients to overcome barriers that may have otherwise prevented them from seeking therapy.

Disadvantages/ Concerns/ Disclaimers

Important to note, online therapy may not be a good fit for some clients.  With this in mind, therapists often offer a free brief consultation to client’s entering through my private practice to determine if online therapy may be a good fit for them.

Crisis Support. Since Storm Haven, Counseling & Wellness offers online therapy for the whole state of California, online therapy can place the therapist and client at a distance geographically, so it is oftentimes difficult to respond quickly and effectively when a crisis happens. In example, if a client is experiencing active suicidal thoughts and/or has suffered a personal tragedy, it can be difficult or even impossible for the therapist to provide direct or even immediate assistance. Mitigation: You may be able to work with your therapist to identify local resources and support should a crisis occur.

Severe Conditions. Similarly, online therapy is not appropriate for clients with severe psychiatric conditions who require a higher level of care via direct treatment. Mitigation: If Storm Haven is unable to meet your needs, we may be able to provide referrals to a provider who can.

Technology. Online therapy may not be a good fit for you if you are not comfortable with technology. Mitigation: Your therapist may be able to offer a consultation online through a secure and confidential platform in order to, in a way, test the waters and determine if online therapy and technology may be a good fit for you.

Network Connection. Connectivity and reliability of your online service provider.  Clients will need to ensure they have the proper internet speed in order to reliably connect to an online session.  Mitigation: If you can stream an online movie, you should be good to go; however, your therapist will review a backup plan should a technology issue arise.

Privacy may be a concern if you do not have a private space to prevent another person from eavesdropping wherein they may overhear sensitive content.  Mitigation: Clients are often able to get creative with finding a private space to overcome this barrier. For example, finding a private place (e.g., meeting from your parked car) to prevent interruptions. You may also want to use a fan or sound machine outside a room for added privacy. Your Therapist may also be able to brainstorm with you and offer additional creative solutions to best alleviate this concern and secure privacy.

Body Language. Lack of body language and the possibility for miscommunication. Mitigation: While this is a valid concern, it may be easily remedied with consistent, open, and honest communication with your therapist—clarifying when needed.

Miscommunication is a concern that may be present in “How will I connect with my therapist if we meet online?” Mitigation: Often this concern is alleviated once a rhythm is established. Clients often report they feel like they are in the same room as their therapist while in session. Consistent, open, and honest communication with your therapist is encouraged. Your therapist may be able to further mitigate your concerns by showing you tips and tricks to feeling a greater connection (e.g., how to position your camera to feel the connection).
